Anyone Visiting Needs Help with Getting a Ham Licence in Cumbria? Ask your questions here
We all started at the start so dont be afraid to ask.

Okay. what’s the crack? I’ve taken a couple of the online mock tests in the past with no actual reading up, just general absorbed info and common sense and was there or there abouts on the pass mark.

Does anyone have any specific reading material i should follow, things i should be aware of etc it was the bandplan stuff that i remember getting wrong last time? Additionally, Where can one take the test? Are you able to do it online these days? If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great.

@M7NCY The test is now online at home with a web cam and a mic. A guy will watch you on the camera white taking your test.

The Software they use is one called Test Reach / Web based

The foundation licence
I recommend you study the syllabus as this contains most of the answers:

Theres also a app on Android called UK Amature something. ITs a little out of date but is ok for Foundation

You are allowed to print out Form EX307 which shows the band plans etc. You can have this in the exam

Your more than welcome to come to Workington Radio Club. They used to do the tests their but now its all online. I preffer it that way.

There is also a Book to buy.. Foundation Licence Manual: for Radio Amateurs (Edition 3 2024): Amazon.co.uk: 9781910193631: Books

If you already know the basics, then I dont see a issue in passing the first test.

Any questions just put them in here and one of us will reply.

Good luck mate be good to have you on the radio with us all.

My advice (for what its worth, lol) …. apart from doing some homework, (maybe joining Essex Hams foundation group) there is loads of time, so read the question, read the question and most importantly, read the question, DO NOT speed read. The reason is that its so easy to get a bit cocky and answer what’s not actually being asked. I dropped 2 points for that very reason and sulked for days, lol.

Yes indeed … one of the questions I misread and confused myself about was to do with another licensed operator using your radio at your shack ….. or something like that, doh!!.

thanks for all the help. going to order the book now.

Then i’ll need to have a look at some handheld radios. at the moment looking at a yaesu FT70 as its comparatively affordable and also has digital capability

FT70 is a great radio and you will pick up that Digital Noise.

I have a Yaesu FTM 500 Radio for Sale an a power supply for sale too.

Think id take £395 for them both.

This is digital too and Ill program loads of frequencys in it for you so you can listen to it all.
