Packet TNC's and a node at the club

I had a thought about putting a packet node at the club. I’m a bit more comfortable with the whole setup now so can add a node, link it to the internet. Its a relatively cheap thing to do. An old RPi 3 runs the software without even warming up.

This is then connected to a TNC and then to a radio. The TNC is a kit and the radio is anything that does 2m FM and has a way of keying.My FT817 does it, so do the £30 PMR rigs.

Question is…..Is there any interest in doing it?

Follow up….We could do a group buy for TNC’s. I’m happy to build the kits and do the testing etc. But it’d be better to do it as a club activity, One weekend or something like that (maybe)

Is it just me who is keen on this or are there others? Discuss!!

Hi Alex theres a spare antenna on the other end of the building connected to th 991a that no one uses. I wouldnt recommend using the 991a like to expensive of a radio to use packet on.

Im all up for progress like, but my pockets are empty with providing the cumbria CQ network lol

I’d get another Tait TM8110. Fairly bullet proof and cheap. Only need a TNC, old RPi3 and TNC.

Maybe a club member has an old RPi they could donate. I don’t mind building the TNC and sorting out the rig and cables. We have a PSU and antenna.

packet is something i definitley want to get into. im over in Broughton Cross about 3miles west of cockermouth, still struggling to get things sorted out and together to get my antenna mounted outside. need a bracket, a pole, chemical anchors and bolts etc etc but before any playing with packet radio i need to see what my signal will be like with a mounted exterior antenna…

You’ll not be able to access gb7kse directly from your qth. But packet is like the mesh things, you’ll be able to access a club node (gb7wrc for example) which would then be connected other nodes.

I was thinking of getting a couple of loan tnc’s so people could try it out. I’ll ask if the club will contribute this week.
